Manjing Zhang (b. 1991) is a Chinese composer and pianist currently based in Xi'an, China.

 

She is currently teaching at Xi'an Conservatory of Music. She holds degrees from the University of Minnesota (Ph.D. ‘21), Carnegie Mellon University (M.M. ‘18), and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China (B.M. ‘15). From 2019 to 2021, she was a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Minnesota. Her primary composition instructors include Shuai Zhang, Xiaogang Ye, Wenchen Qin, Alex Lubet, and Reza Vali.

 

Zhang’s compositional voice is characterized by a refined approach to timbral layering, nuanced dynamic shaping, and meticulously crafted formal design. Drawing on a broad spectrum of regional and ethnic musical traditions, she weaves culturally resonant elements into contemporary idioms through structurally rigorous and sonically intricate techniques.

Her works have been presented at the Beijing Modern Music Festival, Chinese-ASEAN Music Festival, Chang'an Art Festival, Space City New Music Festival, Digital Discovery Festival, Downtown Brooklyn Chamber Music Festival, Carnegie Music Hall (Pittsburgh), DiMenna Center of Music (New York), NYC Contemporary Music Symposium, Center for New Music (San Francisco), International Composition Institute of Thailand(Bangkok), and the 2023 Wang Lisan 90th Birthday—Piano and Chamber Music Composition Seminar (broadcast). She has also been invited to participate in programs such as Connecticut Summerfest and LunART Festival Composers Hub program.

 

She has collaborated with distinguished ensembles, including Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic, China-ASEAN Contemporary Orchestra, North/South Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble for These Times, National Sawdust Ensemble, Tacet(i) Ensemble, and others.

张蔓菁,西安音乐学院作曲系教师,青年作曲家,博士,法国音乐出版社BabelScores签约作曲家。毕业于University of Minnesota (博士),  Carnegie Mellon University (硕士), 中央音乐学院 (本科),先后师从作曲家张帅、叶小纲、秦文琛、Reza Vali, 和Alex Lubet。

 

她的创作注重音响层次的构建、动态对比的运用与结构的精巧设计,擅长从多样的民族与地域音乐中提炼素材,在现代音乐语言中呈现富有文化深度的声音表达。

张氏是美国纽约 National Sawdust 乐团委约创作的中国作曲家。作品入选2021年哥伦比亚大学音乐会 (Columbia Concert)。2022年以女性作曲家的身份参与活动 Music by Women Composers。在美期间,她分别获得卡内基梅隆大学和明尼苏达大学作曲系最高奖学金、全额奖学金以及作曲系学术研究基金,并从 2019年至 2021年于明尼苏达大学音乐系担任助教,负责本科生的教学。

 

个人作品上演于:北京现代音乐节、中国东盟音乐节、2023汪立三诞辰90周年暨钢琴及室内乐创作哈尔滨研讨会(播放)、长安艺术周、Space City New Music Festival、Digital Discovery Festival、Downtown Brooklyn Chamber Music FestivalCarnegie Music Hall (匹兹堡)、DiMenna Center for Classical Music (纽约)、NYC Contemporary Music Symposium’s concert(纽约)、Center for New Music (旧金山) 以及 International Composition Institute of Thailand (曼谷) 等等。她也曾被邀请参与 Connecticut Summerfest、INMF 2025 Summer Composition Study Program 和 LunART Festival Composers Hub program 等国际音乐项目。并与:Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic, China-ASEAN Contemporary Orchestra,  Ensemble for These Times, North/South Chamber Orchestra, National Sawdust Ensemble 以及 Tacet(i) ensemble 等乐团合作。
